1965 Lotus Elan - $36,500 - Los Angeles, CA -

The purest sports car of all time? Perhaps. The inspiration behind the Mazda Miata MX5, the best selling two seater in history? Unquestionably. The vehicle of choice for the uber-stylish Emma Peel in the Avengers. Certainment! However you care to label it, there is no doubt that the Elan is a phenomenal car. The very embodiment of Lotus founder Colin Chapman’s design philosophy, it is incredibly lightweight, powerful and possessed of unparalleled handling. Evolved from the Elite (Chapman’s first real offering) and developed by Ron Hickman (beloved by DIYers the world over as the inventor of the WorkMate portable workbench), it featured the now familiar steel backbone in place of the all fibreglass chassis used in the Elite. The engine was a simple (and cheap) Ford UK production four-cylinder block, fitted with a twin-cam head, designed by Harry Mundy. Independent suspension and disc brakes at all four corners rounded out the package. Tipping the scales at under 1,500 lbs., it was a miracle of engineering.

Offered here, is a stunningly original, long-term California car with full weather equipment. Never wrecked or rusted and with just 68,000 miles, it runs and drives just as Mr. Chapman intended! Also, being a very early Series 2 car, despite having the full width dashboard, it still has the more desirable separate taillights of the Series 1. Something of a Series 1 ½, if you will!

These early cars, with their individual taillights, are the most sought after versions of the Elan (which would ultimately go through four series) and with just 1,250 S2 built, it is virtually impossible to find an unmolested, dry-climate example any more. This therefore, is a rare chance indeed.

Lotus Elan - Auction - Birmingham, AK - The Bahamas Speed Week was a sports car race held in Nassau, Bahamas from 1954 to 1966. Winners of the race included Stirling Moss, Dan Gurney, Innes Ireland, Roger Penske, Hap Sharp and A.J. Foyt. The first race in 1954 was held on old airport runways in Nassau, won by Masten Gregory in a Ferrari. By 1957 the race was moved inland to a 5-mile (8.0 km) track, with Stirling Moss winning in 57, and Dan Gurney winning in 1960. The event however was ultimately doomed due to the need for track repairs and the associated lack of additional funding from the Bahamian government, as well as competition from other races, the race discontinued in 1966.This exceptional, matching numbers, 1965 Lotus Type 26 Elan S2, chassis 26/4143, left the factory equipped with engine LP 2545 LBA and body number 3778. Finished in Cirrus White with Black interior and a grey hood, it was invoiced to East Bay Service Ltd., Nassau on February 2nd 1965, for John Gordon of New Providence. Mr. Gordon was a respected privateer who raced numerous examples of the Lotus and OSCA marques, his most notable performances having come at the Sebring 12 Hours in 1960 and 62, where he won his class on both occasions in a works OSCA.Ordered specifically for racing, Mr Gordon immediately set about preparing this Elan for competition use, removing the bulky intake pipes, windscreen, passenger seat and hood. A cut-down Plexiglas screen was installed, along with a drivers roll hoop and repositioned rear view mirror. To illustrate how seriously Mr Gordon took his racing, even the apertures around the headlights were taped up to improve airflow!Throughout 1965 Mr Gordon cleaned up in every club race he entered, but the headline event of the Bahamian racing calendar was of course the end-of-season Bahamas Speed Week. The week attracted grids worthy of a world championship calibre event, thanks to the huge prize funds and party atmosphere. For the 1965 Speed Week, Mr Gordon contested three of the twelve events. The first, the Island Residents race, fell to Hans Schenk in his new Porsche RSK Spyder, 26/4143 finishing in the runners up spot. Mr Gordon went one better in the second race, his Elan winning after Schenk retired on lap two with a broken fuel pump. In the Bahamas Cup event, Gordon finished tenth. For 1966, he set about further improving 26/4143 by having the rear wheel arches flared to accommodate wider JAP Magnesium wheels, these being shod with the latest Goodyear tyres. Other upgrades included a more aerodynamic rear view mirror, and that year his domination continued. During the 1966 Speed Week, Gordon took a clean sweep of victories, winning both events for Island Residents and also the Bahamas Cup. Mr Gordon retained the car until December 1988, taking it with him when he re-located to Florida in 1971. Thereafter it went through the hands of three more American-based owners (Henry Grady, David Willer and Ian Fitz-Simon).Since its repatriation to the UK, 26/4143 enjoyed a major restoration between 2009 and 2011, and with further development was granted a FIA Appendix K Historic Technical Passport (HTP) in August 2013. Importantly, the car retains its original chassis, engine, body and gearbox and even comes complete with two sets of the original JAP Magnesium wheels from 1966, plus the original grey hood.In its current ownership since October 2011, this exciting Elan has been part of a private collection, and has been successfully campaigned at Goodwood, comfortably winning its class.Presented in quite superb cosmetic and mechanical condition throughout, this wonderful little car is described by the vendor as being on the button. EFX 276C is UK registered and is offered with a current MoT, also a detailed history file containing historical documents from its early and contemporary competition career, invoices for restoration work, an original Lotus Elan Brochure and the aforementioned FIA papers.A very interesting and a cost-effective entry for some of the best events in the classic car world.View 1965 Lotus Type 26 Elan S2 on 'http://www.coys.co.uk/cars/1965-lotus-type-26-elan-s2-2' for further details.

1969 Lotus Elan S4
This Elan is in very nice condition and needs nothing to be driven and enjoyed now.  With a 1600 cc Lotus Twin Cam engine making 115 hp situated in a 1517 lb. car, you can see why these cars are so much fun to drive and have a near cult following.  The 4 speed gearbox shifts very nicely and the four wheel disc brakes are working great.

The paint is in very nice condition – better than most Elans you’ll see.  There are a couple of stars in the hood that are not real apparent and common to fiberglass cars of this era.  The interior is very nice.  It has nice black wall Michelins on the correct center lock wheels.

We’ve had a few Elans in over the years and this one feels very solid and drives particularly well.  Personal inspection is encouraged and this car will certainly impress you!

1967 Lotus Elan S3 coupe
s/n 3616647
Light Blue with Black Interior

The Lotus Elan was launched in October 1962 at the British International Motor Show at Earls Court, just as the sixties started swinging. Jaguar had launched the E-Type the previous year, while AC had the Cobra and Ferrari the GTO. These were big, powerful, and expensive machines. The Elan was very different, and typically Lotus – ultra modern, lightweight, nimble and tremendous fun. From arch enthusiast Jay Leno to Gordon Murray, designer of the McLaren F1, the accolades bestowed upon the gritty Elan typically call it “the greatest handling car of all time” or something equally grandiose in nature. We couldn’t agree more.

In the same year that Lotus revolutionized racing car design with the monocoque 25, they also packed the Elan with technically innovative features like the first backbone tube chassis of any road car as well as a fiberglass body, four-wheel independent suspension, weight of 1500 lbs (670kg) and the new Lotus Twin Cam engine, produced by significantly modifying a Ford 116E block. The new unit yielded over 100 horsepower and provided endless entertainment for the featherweight Elan package.

Right away the new Elan proved a welcome replacement to the fragile, expensive-to-build Elite and would go on to be Lotus’s biggest commercial success to that point, reviving the company’s overstretched finances. Initially a roadster, the Elan was offered with a hardtop in 1963 and a coupe came along in 1965.

This particular Elan is comprehensively built-up to current vintage racing specification with steel crank, wet/dry sump system, upgraded suspension, among many other thoughtful improvements. See this video documentary on the build process! Just one shakedown weekend at Monterey Pre-Reunion since build.

1969 Lotus Elan - Auction - Weybridge, - We are pleased to present this Lotus Elan S4 DHC (Drop Head Coupe) which has recently been repatriated from Long Beach, California. This is a genuine DHC and not, as commonly seen, an adapted hardtop version as confirmed by the Lotus 'Classic Certificate of Vehicle Provenance'. An accompanying letter from Lotus states that this is a Type 45 DHC with a unit number of 8799. It also confirms that the engine number G18158, with the suffix G, represents the standard compression and engine size for the American market. It further states that it left the factory on the 11th April 1969 under the invoice number of ECS4487, representing a factory assembled car for export. The Elan was originally distributed by 'British Motor Cars Distributors' in the Los Angeles area; unfortunately, Lotus has suffered loss of some of the original documents so cannot confirm the original works order or specifications of that time. On inspection, this Elan requires restoration; the coachwork has partially been stripped but, importantly, the original engine still remains in it resulting in this being a matching numbers Elan; an important detail in relation to values. Further inspection reveals what appears to be a mostly complete motor car; the interior and glass is there but the interior will require re-trimming. Being of glass fibre construction, there are no corrosion issues to deal with in regard to the exterior. The gel coat has been stripped on the front of the bodywork, no doubt done to remove gel cracking that is common on this type of construction. The history file contains a NOVA Certificate, US Ownership Certificate, Import Entry Acceptance Advice (UK duties marked paid) and the previously mentioned Lotus letter and Lotus Classic Certificate of Vehicle Provenance. Offered at 'No Reserve' this genuine Type 45 factory built Lotus Elan S4 represents an excellent opportunity given the strong support by restoration specialists and parts suppliers, plus the rising market prices for this model.

1967 Lotus Elan - Auction - Warwickshire, - The Lotus Elan+2 was introduced in 1967 with a longer wheelbase and two more rear seats than the original Elan. It was advertised ... 'for the discerning motorist who requires the renowned Lotus road holding and performance coupled to an attractive two plus two body'.The Elan+2 embodied the Lotus spirit: it was a fast and agile sports coupé, with very elegant lines and combined the performance and reliability of the original Elan with genuine 2+2 passenger comfort. This car is a road registered race car, having been with the current vendor since August 2011. 'GDS 635F' was first registered in November 1967 and was restored in 2004 as a show car with a new spyder chassis. Four years later it was decided this pretty little Elan should be converted to a racing car and has since raced between 2012-2015 in the Classic Sports Car Club "Swinging Sixties" series. In 2013/14, the car was also entered in the ever competitive Bentley Drivers Club handicap races at Silverstone and was a Class winner in the ACOC Sprint at Goodwood in 2012. The vendor of this pretty little car also took part in the 2012 Lotus Élan 50th Anniversary races at Brands Hatch and Donington Park, running reliably and quickly. The vendor has supplied detailed information on the spec of the car and some highlights are presented below as follows. The bodyshell is finished in French blue with removable strips and roundels and the interior has been stripped out and with lightened boot, bonnet and doors the total weight is believed to be around 775kg.A Tillett B6 F FIA seat and OMP FIA 6 point harness (all in date) and the full roll cage was done by Kelvedon Lotus/Kelsport in March 2012 including seat and seat belt anchorages. There is also a plumbed in fire extinguisher and FIA cut-out switch, with both inside and exterior pull handles. The Spyder chassis has tubular negative camber wishbones and AVO Shock absorbers with spare AVO and Tony Thompson sets if preferred. The engine now produces 166 BHP on Mass Rolling Road and similar figures have also been produced on Pete Baldwin Rolling Road (206 engine bhp) with the Dyno and build sheets available. The engine was rebuilt in mid-2013 with a new American Ford Racing cast block decked and bored to suit the detailed build. All machining and head building was completed by Anglian Engines, put together by ‘J & A Kit and Classic Car' and completely re-fettled (rings, shells right through top and bottom, gaskets, seals, valves re-cut, head re-shimmed, new springs and buckets, new clutch plate) in the winter 2014/15 ready for the forthcoming season. Some spares are also supplied with the car, including front pads, 4 wheels & tyres, caliper seals, water pump & belts etc..   This well prepared Elan offers amazing value for someone wishing a low-cost entry into motorsport with a marque that is historically synonymous with small, light, quick sports cars.  Normal 0 false false false EN-GB JA X-NONE <w:LsdException Locked="false" Priority="47" Name="Grid Table 2

1969 LOTUS ELAN PLUS 2
--Cirrus White and Black Interior, 104,950 original miles, 4-speed manual transmission, Chassis #50/1781, Special Edition Engine 119753.

The Lotus Elan Plus 2 as envisioned by Colin Chapman (Founder of Lotus Cars) was to have the following basic design concept… “it must combine the very best features of the Elan Coupe with reliability and yet be able to carry two adults and two children on a long holiday-in comfort” and that’s just what they created! The Elan 1558cc Twin-Can engine produces 118bhp at 6250 rpm and combined with its light weight make for an extremely exhilarating sports car.

This Elan Plus 2 spent the first 40 years of its life in California with only 3 owners. The current owner has stored the Elan in climate controlled secure storage for much of the last 6 years. According to ownership history and discussions, the Elan received a repaint in the 70’s. Today the paint is fair and a respray would be welcomed. Body panels are straight, chrome is good, headlight covers work and fit properly and all glass is good. Interior is very original and in nice condition, the center console was recovered and dash is nice, but shows some age cracking. As pictured, the headliner is good, but does have a slight tear on driver’s side.

This car runs and drives exceptionally well, having been previously owned by the father of one of our mechanics, it has been serviced when and where needed. With a little TLC this Elan Plus 2 will make a driver’s car with room for weekend touring.

This Elan Plus 2 is has received $5,000 in servicing in the last few years of ownership making it ready for its next owner to use and enjoy.
