1967 Lotus Elan - Auction - Weybridge, SURREY - The original Elan was introduced in 1962 as a roadster, although an optional hardtop was offered in 1963 and a coup version in 1965. The two-seat Lotus Elan replaced the elegant, but unreliable and expensive to produce, Lotus Elite. It was the first Lotus road car to use the, now famous, steel backbone sub-frame with a fibreglass body. The Elan embodied the Colin Chapman minimum weight design philosophy. It was technologically advanced with a Lotus-Ford twin-cam, 1558cc engine, four-wheel disc brakes and four-wheel independent suspension. The Elan +2 was introduced in 1967 with a longer wheelbase and two more rear seats. It was a fast and agile sporting coup with very elegant lines. It combined the performance and reliability of the Elan Coup with genuine 2+2 passenger comfort. With less than 1200 of these cars on the roads today, their relative rarity, beautiful lines, impressive performance and practicality are the main factors for the rising interest in these cars among collectors. This particular example was purchased by the vendor from the original owner almost 30 years ago. The vendor informs us that in 1989, he had the chassis replaced with a galvanised one; he also had the body replaced at the same time. In more recent times the vendor undertook an extensive two year restoration on the car. The car had a complete respray, the interior was entirely replaced, the engine was rebuilt by Pat Thomas of Kelvedon Lotus with a new head and many upgraded internals and now boasts electronic ignition. Once these upgrades were complete and combined with a full stainless steel exhaust, the car was dyno tested and produced an impressive 137bhp. Among numerous other parts the car also received a gearbox overhaul, new wiring loom and adjustable shock absorbers. The bill for this restoration is estimated by the vendor to be over 20,000 and the pile of invoices in the history folder casts little doubt over this. The vehicle is supplied with a V5C registration document and a recent MoT test certificate. The time and attention given to restoring this car is immediately clear; it surely must be one of the best examples in the country requiring only one thing a new owner.

1969 Lotus Elan - Auction - Weybridge, SURREY - Upon its launch in 1967, the Lotus Elan +2 fitted very snugly between British sports car manufacturers such as Marcos, TVR and major manufacturers such as Triumph and MG. The Elan +2 was a development and evolution from the original Elan of 1962 and saw a totally new closed coup body designed to accommodate a couple of children or useful storage for shopping. The two Elans; the original still being produced alongside the +2, had many interchangeable parts except for the body; this was a benefit to the +2 as the mechanical parts had proven very reliable. The Lotus Elan +2  - as with the original - was also sold in kit form, but to get away from the heritage of kit cars, Lotus introduced an improved Elan a year later which was only available to buy factory built. The improvements were a more luxurious interior and fog lamps fitted under the front bumpers, and the vehicle was designated the Lotus Elan +2S. The next major change was in 1971 when a big valve engine was offered, resulting in the Lotus Elan +2 130S, with another option of a very attractive metal-flake roof paint job. This is probably the best race prepared Lotus Elan on the market. Literally tens of thousands of pounds have been spent with specialist companies Track-Group Ltd, Tony Thompson Racing and Minister Ltd. Track-Group have completely rebuilt the Lotus Twin Cam all steel engine and added new Weber carburettors, then professionally set up and dyno'd at 178bhp, with the engine alone costing over 12,000. A fully rebuilt close ratio gearbox with all new internals has also been fitted. Other items include a three bolt differential  output shaft upgrade, an up-rated differential, a high torque starter motor, large bore exhaust manifold, large bore stainless exhaust system, adjustable dampers with race springs, race specification drive shafts, foam filled aluminium fuel tank, a facet red top fuel pump, new wiring loom, a high flow aluminium radiator and header tank, up-rated engine and gearbox mounts, new FIA Corbeau seat, roll cage, plumbed-in fire suppression and electrical cut off. Finished in red, this Elan is supplied with a V5 registration document and an MoT test certificate. This car literally wants for nothing, everything is new and the car has only 1 hours shakedown test since the rebuild.

In total only 305 Plus 2S and Plus 2S 130 Elans were built for North America maket between 1969 and 1973, making this a very rare car.  The Plus 2S model was an update of the Plus 2.  The Plus 2S version came with 6 small gauges for Oil, Water temp, Battery Condition, Temp, Fuel, Clock, 4 warning lights in center of dash for hazard, parking brake, brake fail, rear screen heating element on, a luxury interior including revised seats and centre console, and fog/driving lamps below the bumper.

Items changed that were not part of the original build include repainting to a pearlessence paint similar to the original Lotus Yellow. In 2013 the engine was rebuilt and converted to Weber carbs, head rebuild to big valve specification, engine was fully balanced during rebuild. All fluids were replaced, and the gas tank was also cleaned. New high torque starter motor, and smart battery charger. New Plus S 130 alloy wheels added in 1999. The girling brake servo units were replaced with Lockheed servo units when the brakes were built. Last year the electronic ignition system was replace along with the rear shocks and springs. Fire extinguisher system installed. All other areas of the car have been build or replaced as needed to get the car in as factory build solid driver condition. The paint has a few blemishes on it, and over the car needs good cleanup, as it has not been used very much in the last few years.

Purchase history

A famous Canadian Author originally purchased this Plus S2 but unfortunately the records of this are with George Harker who purchased the car form the Authour, and were not passed on to Ken during the sale. An attempt is being make to find George and retrieve more information about the Plus 2S’s original owner. Ken Chan purchased this Plus 2S in 1984 and then set about doing a rolling restoration of the car.

Same owner since 1969. Car has been meticulously maintained by the owner including body-off backbone chassis restoration and upgrades. The body and paint is very straight with no crazing in the fibreglass and only a couple of minor flaws commensurate with a car that has been driven and enjoyed. Original Lotus Service Book and factory service manual included with a copy of "The Original Lotus Elan" history of the Elan. Interior is in excellent condition including wood dash panel, carpets and upholstery. Excellent top, tonneau and boot cover. All instruments and controls are in full working condition.

The Elan was the first car produced by Lotus Cars with the famous backbone chassis and Ford based 1557 cc twin cam engine. While producing approximately 115 hp the car only weighed 1600 pounds (726 kg) which combined with Lotus' race inspired suspension, produced a true sports car that was incredibly quick, agile and one of the most fun to drive sports cars ever produced. If you think the Lotus Elan looks familiar, it should, This car was the inspiration for the original Mazda MX5 Miata.

1998 Lotus Elan - $15,000 - Vancouver, BC -

Unless you have owned one, you will never have driven a car like the M100 Lotus Elan - because there has never been a car like it! What other car offers supercar performance, world-class handling, modern material design and build, hand-crafted construction, reliability, convertible fun, excellent efficiency and mileage, and gorgeous styling? NONE !!

The Lotus Elan M100, launched in 1989, was a two-seater, convertible sports car designed by Peter Stevens and produced by Lotus whilst under the ownership of General Motors.

The M100 Elan's cornering performance was undeniable. On release the Elan was described by Autocrat magazine as the quickest point to point car available.

The Elan M100 has made its mark in the history as arguably the finest handling front wheel drive car ever made. Altogether 3,855 Elan's were built between November 1989 and July 1992, including 129 normally aspirated (non-turbo) cars. 559 of them were sold in the U.S.

A limited edition of 800 series 2 (S2) M100 Elans were produced by Bugatti between June 1994 and September 1995 when it was discovered that enough surplus engines were available to make this possible. All series 2 cars were turbocharged.

The M100 Elan uses a 1,588 cc DOHC Isuzu 4XE1 Engine which produces 162 bhp and 0-60 time of 6.5s and a top speed of 137 mph.

1966 Lotus Elan - Auction - Warwickshire, - The original Lotus Elan (Type 26), was first introduced as a roadster and replaced the elegant, but unreliable and costly to produce Lotus Elite. It was the first Lotus road car to use a steel backbone chassis with a fibreglass body and in the early days, Elans were also available in kit form for home assembly but predictably that didn't last long. As is often the way, the Elan evolved through a number of iterations before manufacture ceased in 1973. These developments mainly concerned comfort and civility but all through its life the essence of the Elan didn't change. A technologically advanced DOHC development of Ford's proven "Kent' engine, bored out to 1558cc (commonly known as the Twin-Cam) provided the propulsion, whilst cutting-edge features such as all-round disc brakes, fully independent suspension and nimble rack and pinion steering provided agility and handling that was simply amazing compared to the opposition. Colin Chapman proudly announced in the launch literature that "We wanted to build you a fun car.."; a brief he achieved with vigour thanks to the fact that his unequalled talent for vehicle set-up was never more prevalent than in the Elan's performance. Exciting paintwork colours were introduced such as Carnival Red, Pistachio Lime Green and the delectable Lotus Yellow and the Elan became the 'Darling' of the High Street in the mid-sixties. The Series 2 (S2) appeared in 1966 and featured a number of cosmetic and detail improvements over the earlier car and the Special Equipment (SE) model featured centre lock wheels and electric windows. 'SAR 57D' is a 1966, Elan S2-SE and was first registered in July of that year. It has been enjoyed by three previous owners and the vendor, and has an indicated mileage of 65,611 which we cannot verify but may well be correct as the car has been in dry storage and SORN'd since August, 2005. The car is in reasonable condition, it wouldn't take a lot to put some sparkle in the White paintwork and the Black interior is a little tired, but all it really needs is a bit of a tidy and some tlc. The original V5 is with the car, as are MoT Certificates from July 1977 until 2005 and it will be MoT'd by the time of sale. However, we suspect that the main interest in this Elan will be in its first owner, a certain Peter Sellers and according to the V5, the car was delivered to him at 37 Panton St, Haymarket on 22nd. July 1966. There may be a few people who have never heard of Peter Sellers- but it will only be a few. He was a legendary Actor and Comedian as well as being a talented Singer, Director and Photographer, who sadly passed away in 1980. In terms of Acting and Comedy he is regarded as being in the top 50 in the world at both, ever. His body of work is too vast to list here but Dr Strangelove, the Pink Panther, Inspector Clouseau and the Goon show have all had an influence on British society. Girls played a major part in his life, he was married four times including Britt Eckland (64-68) and Lynne Frederick (77-80), and during the sixties and seventies was frequently seen in the company of the world's most beautiful women. Perhaps less known was his passion for cars, having owned dozens, and never missing a photo opportunity with his new toy, whether on four wheels or two legs. Which makes it strange that we can only locate one picture of him in this car, popping up from underneath the closed tonneau cover and about to come out with some piece of wisdom in the voice of "Bluebottle" (Ask your Dad). We hope that we may soon have access to a file of photographs containing some more shots of him in this car with Britt Eckland by the time of sale, however naturally, we can make no guarantees. Whether this little white Elan interests you as a motoring project or a piece of Movie Memorabilia, please come and talk to us.

1972 Lotus Elan - Auction - Warwickshire, - Lotus launched a legend in 1962, the new and ground-breaking Lotus Elan. Following on from the Elite, the new car offered improved handling allied with better performance. Below the bonnet sat a new 1558cc, twin-cam four-cylinder engine which would become a legend in its own right, powering other classic Lotus models including, of course, the Cortina sporting saloons. Initially the Elan was produced as an open two-seater, but in 1964 a fixed head coupé became available, with both bodies being constructed from GRP and mounted on a separate chassis. In 1967, the very distinctive Elan+2 joined the range and both models continued to sell well throughout the late sixties with various detail changes. The desirable "Sprint' model was introduced in 1971 and was the ultimate incarnation. It justified its name thanks to a substantial increase in power to 126bhp resulting from the adoption of a big-valve head with high-lift cams, a raised compression ratio and (initially) Weber 40 DCOE 31s. The drivetrain was suitably toughened and braced and the front callipers were redesigned to cope with the increased performance. This charming and genuine Lotus Elan Sprint Drop-head Coupé was manufactured in May 1972 as detailed in the accompanying Lotus Certificate of Vehicle Provenance, and was supplied new to Hammonds & Oakwood Ltd. of Kent. It was initially sold to a local doctor, doubtless to escape the pressures of his day to day ministrations, and he eventually passed it on to his son. Still sporting its original registration of "NGN 134L', this amazingly packaged, extremely capable and surprisingly roomy classic sports car is simply a great example of British automotive design. The car is presented in the unusual colour combination of Colorado Orange and Cirrus White. According to Lotus, this attractive orange colour was the 2nd rarest out of the 8 different colours available for the UK Sprint DHC. It certainly looks fantastic and makes a refreshing change from the regular red over white, two-tone "Gold Leaf' livery. With its contrasting black interior, with wood and trim in fine and nicely patinated condition and its desirable Colin Chapman signed steering-wheel, this is a truly lovely example. The car retains its original and matching chassis and engine, showing numbers that correlate correctly for a UK-market Sprint DHC. It is accompanied by a wealth of servicing records and invoices from as early as 1973 right up to the present day. The most impressive history file is home to a number of old MoT Certificates corroborating the mileage, and also contains the very rare original service booklet and handbook. Interestingly, also in the history file, are numerous hand written, in-period letters from previous owners demonstrating diligent ownership and helping verify the car's mileage and originality. Prior to our vendor, the car's custodian since 1990 was an enthusiastic engineer who kept a detailed account of maintenance and repair work done over the 20 years of his ownership. On a recent inspection the car's original chassis is said to be in good condition. In a letter from the file, dated 16th November 1976, the Doctor's son makes reference to a speedometer change after 12,500 miles which helps confirm the car's current indicated mileage of only 83,500. The car drives and pulls well, with good pressures and balanced handling and has a current MoT until 22.09.16. Everybody loves Elans, particularly the Sprint, and with their addictive blend of performance and agility they are a very desirable little sports car and welcome anywhere.

1968 Lotus Elan - Auction - Warwickshire, - The Lotus Elan burst onto the scene in 1962 as the first road-going Lotus to use the now synonymous combination of a steel backbone chassis coupled to a separate fibreglass body. Colin Chapman proudly announced in the launch literature that "We wanted to build you a fun car.." A technologically advanced DOHC development of Ford's proven "Kent' engine, bored out to 1558cc provided the propulsion, whilst cutting-edge features such as all-round disc brakes fully independent suspension and nimble rack and pinion steering gave agility and handling that was second-to-none. This S3 Elan Fixed head coupe "Super Safety' example is finished in the BRM colours of metallic Polychromatic Green with Orange bumpers and a black vinyl interior. It was formerly owned by motoring journalist John Simister (of Evo & Octane fame) and has been continually developed/uprated at great expense over many years to produce the ultimate fast-road spec'd Elan. Modifications include Spyder chassis, full Tony Thompson Racing 'fast road' brake/suspension/chassis upgrades including; H/D wishbones & polyurethane bushes, 26R-spec driveshafts & propshaft, steel billet rear hub shafts, uprated shock absorbers & springs. In addition, a Safety Devices FIA rear cage/sill bars/foot bars with 4-point harnesses has been fitted. The original engine has been uprated with forged pistons, larger valves, Cosworth L2 cams, full TTR exhaust system (inc manifold) and produces 135bhp whilst remaining perfectly tractable according to the vendor. The cooling system features 26R-spec aluminium radiator & swirl pot plus front oil cooler. Finally, the body was treated to a full restoration & repaint in period BRM colours by renowned fibreglass specialists Option 1 in Bromsgrove. There are invoices on file for the above work totalling over £30,000. Arguably the S3 FHC is the prettiest version of the Elan (featuring the more delicate rear lamps & 'round' wheel arches) and although over 45 years old, it is still one of the best handling cars available. A good history file accompanies the car with invoices for TTR upgrades & Option 1 bodywork restoration (a CD of photos is available), old MoT certificates and letters from previous owners. This little Elan offers a "turn-key' classic proposition that is likely to embarrass far more modern traffic on the roads today.

1964 Lotus Elan - Auction - Iver, - Introduced in 1962, the Elan featured a simple but effectivesteel backbone frame and all-independent wishbone suspension whichused a modified Chapman Strut, as developed in Lotus Grand Prixcars, at the rear. Rack-and-pinion steering was sourced from theTriumph Vitesse and there were Girling disc brakes all round. TheElan's engine was a highly modified 1498cc (later 1558cc) FordCortina unit incorporating Lotus's own twin-camshaft cylinder headand both the gearbox and differential came likewise from Ford.Introduced in November 1964, the S2 featured numerous detailstyling changes and improved brakes. As one would expect, given itsbackground and specification, the Elan proved to be a highlycapable circuit racer and, capitalising on the numerous successesachieved by privately entered cars, Lotus introduced their ownversion, the '26R', in 1964.Finished in iconic Lotus red with original black trim, this veryearly Series 2 Elan (sometimes known as a Series 1 1/2) is one ofonly 15-20 cars built with the Series 1 rear lights - three roundlights on either side and pull up windows with a chrome button.Later, Lotus changed to the Series 2/3 eliptical rear lights withwind up windows making this particular Lotus a very rare car. Ithas the original body shell, perfect wheel arches and original bodypanels, doors, bonnet and boot. It also has the original engine, close ratio gearbox, perfect chassis and original chassis plate, seats, instruments, dash board, door handles, gear knob, green andyellow horn push, steel wheels with Lotus hub caps, cant rails andhood mechanism and pedals. The bodywork and the paint are both invery good condition and the car drives well. It has recently hadnew front shock absorbers, a full service and a brake rebuildincluding new front brake callipers. It is fitted with Lotusgearstick knob, steering wheel, fly-off petrol cap, walnut dash anda black hood cover. A full ground-up restoration took place 8,000miles ago and the V5C certificate shows the car is a one ownervehicle from new with genuine mileage and matching numbersthroughout. This is surely a fast appreciating asset.

Lotus Elan - $30,000 - Richmond, - Lotus Elan is the name of two convertible cars and one fixed head coup produced by Lotus Cars. 1964 Lotus Elan - Auction - Weybridge, SURREY - Introduced in 1962, the Elan featured a simple but effective steel backbone frame and all-independent wishbone suspension which used a modified Chapman Strut, as developed in Lotus Grand Prix cars, at the rear. Rack-and-pinion steering was sourced from the Triumph Vitesse and there were Girling disc brakes all round. The Elan's engine was a highly modified 1498cc (later 1558cc) Ford Cortina unit incorporating Lotus's own twin-camshaft cylinder head and both the gearbox and differential came likewise from Ford. Introduced in November 1964, the S2 featured numerous detail styling changes and improved brakes. As one would expect, given its background and specification, the Elan proved to be a highly capable circuit racer and, capitalising on the numerous successes achieved by privately entered cars, Lotus introduced their own version, the '26R', in 1964. Finished in iconic Lotus red with original black trim, this very early Series 2 Elan (sometimes known as a Series 1 1/2) is one of only 15-20 cars built with the Series 1 rear lights - three round lights on either side and pull up windows with a chrome button. Later, Lotus changed to the Series 2/3 eliptical rear lights with wind up windows making this particular Lotus a very rare car. It has the original body shell, perfect wheel arches and original body panels, doors, bonnet and boot. It also has the original engine, close ratio gearbox, perfect chassis and original chassis plate, seats, instruments, dash board, door handles, gear knob, green and yellow horn push, steel wheels with Lotus hub caps, cant rails and hood mechanism and pedals. The bodywork and the paint are both in very good condition and the car drives well. It has recently had new front shock absorbers, a full service and a brake rebuild including new front brake callipers. It is fitted with Lotus gearstick knob, steering wheel, fly-off petrol cap, walnut dash and a black hood cover. A full ground-up restoration took place 8,000 miles ago and the V5C certificate shows the car is a one owner vehicle from new with genuine mileage and matching numbers throughout. This is surely a fast appreciating asset.
